We’re social creatures.
As humans, we have this inherent need to connect, laugh, converse, inspire and reach out to one another on many different levels.
We’re all striving for happiness and that next level of personal growth and we want to share these successes with others.
In this day and age of character limits, text messages, Facebook friends and thumbs up emojis, it may seem like the power of human connection is fading into the land of the robots.
But I believe the power of human connection can be found in the digital world and we can connect with our audience, clients and partners in some magical ways.
It’s all about the power of positive psychology to connect on a deeper level and this CAN be done in internet land.
Have you heard about the 16 basic human desires?
We all share em’. Steven Reiss, a psychology and psychiatry professor emeritus at the Ohio State University, came up with them after doing the research and finding out from interviewing large groups of people about what’s most important to them.
He discovered there are 16 basic values and desires that drive everything we do. Some of the values that stand out to me are acceptance, curiosity, idealism, and power.
Great news, you can connect to each of those desires in your content and use the power of psychology to deepen your connections. Woohoo!
Another unsurprising desire is social contact.
If you look at your life, I guarantee some of the happiest times you’ve had have involved other people...friends, family, your partner...maybe a total stranger!
True happiness comes from meaningful connections and we are totes capable of doing this in the digital world.
EVEN for all you introverts...like my podcast guest this week James Wedmore.
This self-proclaimed introvert will tell you first hand how important people are in growing your biz and reaching new heights.
So let’s start figuring out how to resonate with your peoples.
Getting social on social media
It’s time to take back the social part of social media.
Let’s start having meaningful conversations.
Let’s start a revolution…
HAHA, I mean it though.
When you sit down to write your posts for Facebook next week, I want you to write to humans instead of followers.
People instead of numbers.
Dig deep and connect with the words on your screen and speak from the heart.
No matter what industry you’re in, the power of your words can have far-reaching effects in the digital realm.
Social media is about social contact. Don’t forget that.
Whenever you finish typing, ask yourself if your words speak to you. Or if they would speak to your bestie or colleague. If not, you may want to start over.
People have the power to help us level up or level out.
You know what I’m talking about.
We’ve all had a frustrating client, a nosy co-worker, a demanding boss…
We’re all human, so no matter how good our intentions are, we’re not perfect.
Problems arise, conflicts occur... communication can break down.
But then there’s the other side…where people have the power to launch your business to heights you could only dream of.
One happy client or customer can change your whole life.
One partnership could take you from 5 figures to 7.
One meeting could launch you onto a new path with a positive rippling effect.
So it’s important to connect with the humans that resonate with you.
Manifest meaningful relationships in your biz. Seek them out. Strive for meaning.
And go ahead and get picky.
You have the power to choose who you work with and when.
EVEN if you’re just starting out, it may seem like you have to work with anybody and everybody, but if you stay confident in your biz goals and dreams and you feel solid about WHO you want to work with and for, you’ll stay on the right path.
Surround yourself with a dream team
I always stop and smile when I reflect on the amazing team I’ve built around me.
Each one of them has amazing talents and skills and I’m honored they’re using these skills to build my vision.
And guess what….we’re 100 percent connected through the digital world.
Not one of my team members even lives in the same state.
We are spread out across North America and we use the digital world for everything we do.
Zooms for meeting, Google docs for content, the list goes on…
I’d say the digital world has even enhanced our relationships.
We’re accessible to each other in every way. And when we do meet up in person, it feels like we just saw each other yesterday….cuz we did. Ha!
At the end of the day, our desire for social contact and connection is what fuels us.
It’s what creates meaning.
In the digital world and IRL.
So never underestimate the power of your next Instagram post, blog or email campaign.
Speak from the heart and speak to your fellow human.
How do you connect with your fellow humans, followers, clients, colleagues? Let me know in the comments!
