When you were in kindergarten, what was your favorite time of day?
Mine was storytime.
(Although to be real with ya, if someone offered me nap time right now, I’d totally be down).
Anyway… storytime was my JAM.
The stories of heroes, awesome adventures, and coming out of bad situations like a glorious badass?
Yeah, I’m still down for that. And guess what – so are most people.
Which is why YOUR story is so important to your biz.
You may think your story isn’t compelling. That you’re boring AF or no one cares about what you have to say.
But the truth is, in your biz, your story is literally the secret sauce to success.
What attracts people to you is… who you are.
That’s what attraction marketing is all about. And the secret to attraction marketing is leveraging your story to work for your biz.
How to Turn Your Story into the Secret Sauce for Your Success
If you haven’t already mastered your story… I know exactly what you’re thinking: “Ugh, where do I even START?”
Like you get wayyyy too all up in your head about it.
Should you talk about that time those mean girls set you up to talk shiz on a secret three way call?
Or how you were obsessed with your metal Snoopy lunchbox?
I mean, yeah you could talk about those things… if they’re related to what you’re doing now.
If they’re not – and you can’t think of a way to tie them into your personal brand – well, then save it for your therapist. LOL
(And BTW, if you do still have a Snoopy lunchbox, that’s amazing. Those were dope. I had one too. And now I kinda wanna buy it off ya...)
And PS: this picture is from the Smithsonian, so if that doesn’t make you feel like bone dust, IDK what will.
Sigh… anyway.
Here’s how to make your story part of your biz:
1. Choose parts of our story that are relevant to your ideal audience.
When choosing which parts of your story to share, it’s helpful to think about where you were when you first started your journey – at the lowest point of your story.
That’s likely where your ideal customer or client is right now.
Someone is in your old busted shoes right now. That’s right.
And you can use your story to help them.
THIS is what attraction marketing is.
Humans are basically pack animals. Sociologically, we are a tribe culture. We want to be with other humans.
Although some days…
Attraction marketing is a foundational part of marketing because it’s how you find your peeps.
Like attracts like.
See why your story – icky, uncomfortable parts and all –is the secret sauce to your success?
2. Your story should be authentic.
Parts of your story you might even find embarrassing. Or kinda sad.
But if they’re relevant to your journey, I strongly suggest you consider putting it out there.
Here’s an example…
You probably already know about MY journey…
How I was an attorney… and made myself sick with stress and all sorts of other lifestyle habits that were literal disasters.
Do you think I lovvveeee recounting how I was a crappy mom and wife because I was sick all the time?
Or how I literally couldn’t pick up my kid anymore because I was so weak?
No.
Not my most shining moment. LOL
But I share that stuff… because it’s real. It’s what actually happened to me.
And while other women may not relate to that exact set of circumstances, they DO relate to:
- Feeling like they suck at everything.
- Feeling like they’re letting everyone down.
- Not feeling totally at home in their bodies.
- And knowing – deep down – that a change NEEDS to happen.
And while that story isn’t me now, I bring that into my personal brand because I’ve been there. And I totally get it.
People really just wanna be seen – and to see that there is hope on the other side.
If your story isn’t super rosy… well, it’s actually good for you.
Because, despite what you see on social media, no one’s life is rosy all the time.
And sharing that… well, it’s actually likely to inspire someone, give them hope, and want to connect with you.
3. Include what you’re passionate about.
Just because you can talk about something doesn’t mean you should.
If it’s something you can do, but you don’t really want to do… why bother talking about it?
You’re literally directing people in the wrong way when you do that.
People assume that when you present something, it’s intentional. I mean, how many times have you gotten caught up in a personal argument and go, “How did we even get here?!”
That’s ok in personal relationships, but in your biz, you’re in charge of directing the conversation.
So guide the conversation to your passions… and how they’re related to your biz.
For example, I love vegan food. And people think I’m crazy. LOL
So I love sharing how to make veganism decadent and delish – which is a thing, I promise. LOL
And while food isn’t my core biz offering, it’s related… because it’s in the health space. It’s something I’m actually passionate about. So I’m happy to talk about it – and tie it into my brand.
On the other hand, you’ll probably notice I don’t put out recipe videos. Because while I can cook, I don’t love it.
I actually “farm out” (ha, see what I did there?) most meals – someone else does the cooking and I do the eating.
If I hopped on the recipe video trend, people would want to talk to me about it – and I’d attract people that were also into that kind of thing. But it’s not my bag – I’m not passionate about making vegan meals. Just eating them. LOL.
See what I mean?
Attraction marketing is the top of your funnel
Cliffsnotes version on what I mean by “funnel”.
A funnel is a three part process to:
- Attract people to your world.
- Nurture them.
- Ultimately lead them to some sort of sale or deeper engagement with you.
Attraction marketing is the tippy top of the funnel – where you catch the widest net.
You don’t wanna be all things to all people.
You wanna be YOU – and attract your peeps to you.
Your story helps you do that.
A ticket to this is normally $97 but if you show up live, you can get in for free.
