We have TWO graduates in the family this year!
Yep, SOOOOO insane.
And it’s really gotten me thinking about the quality of connections in life.
I swear I’m not gonna get all mushy on ya… but it’s big milestones like this that make me really reflective.
AND super grateful that I’ve intentionally curated a lifestyle that LETS me create the kind of connections I want on the reg.
Tell me if you hold this belief—or you used to.
You “have to” sacrifice flexibility for income.
AKA: if you wanna have nice things in life… if you wanna be able to send your kids to quality schools… or give them what you didn’t have growing up…
You gotta work your ass off.
And that means NOT taking time off. Putting yourself last.
AKA: Trading time for money.
But what if I were to tell you this isn’t the only way to have nice things… send your kids to quality schools… and give them what you wish you’d had growing up?
I believe—and I’m living proof—that you can create significant income AND live a flexible life…
AND have ample connection time with your fam.

When I started, I had another job. A full time job. So affiliate marketing was my way to bring in a little extra cash…

AND still use today!
I was inspired to share this ‘cause I find major life events—like graduations—invite you to review your life…
And discover areas where you feel like you’ve succeeded…
And where you’ve failed. Or maybe not delivered the way you wish you had.
Because we have two graduates now – one from college and one from middle school (OMG she’s going into high school!) – my reflections have been DOUBLED.
BTW, I don’t feel old enough to have a college graduate and a kid going into high school.
I feel like I just graduated myself! LOL
And with these big events, I’m so grateful for the extra connection time coming up.
Especially going into this summer with Madeline.
I’m more motivated than ever to get up from my desk and spend time with her (while she is still in the house!).
And, because I consciously designed my biz to be able to work from wherever AND have passive income coming in the door…
I’m able to pick up and go whenever I need to.
Here’s an example.
Wes and I had a flight booked for our college graduate Makenna’s graduation.
Later, we found out she was being awarded Phi Beta Kappa, an academic honor for school. Woop woop!
And the award ceremony would be a couple days before graduation.
Well, since we’ve built a life that offers time flexibility – and we’re completely committed to connection time, especially with our family…
We moved our flights up, a day earlier, to be there for the award ceremony.
I know that would be super hard for many people – it would have been really difficult for me too, way back when I was an attorney and even later on, managing the health club here in Boulder.
Being your own boss can be challenging and a bit scary, for sure…
But it’s also incredibly rewarding.
My friends, we don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.
Having an income and a full, flexible life is not only possible — but available to you right now.

So, let’s talk a little bit about what it means to upgrade your connections.
The first step is to identify where you are now.
By being open and honest with yourself.
So grab a piece of paper – or maybe open the Notes app in your phone – write the word “Relationships” at the top…
And get introspective. And real.
Describe your current experience with relationships.
Ask yourself questions like::
- Who are you close to?
- Do you want to be even closer to them?
- What do you love about these relationships?
- What can you do to improve these relationships?
Write a little story for yourself.
Don't judge yourself too harshly if you aren’t where you want to be.
Instead view this exercise as what you can work toward to improve your life.
Next, you’re going to ask yourself 3 more questions.
- What is your current level of satisfaction in this area out of (1–10)?
- What does a 10/10 look like for you in this area?
- What is currently standing in your way of having a 10/10 in this area?
Imagine your ideal situation.
Use present tense statements.
Write it from the point of view that it’s happening now.
Include the emotional experiences you want to have and what is most important to you.
For example, for me, a 10/10 relationship means being there for the milestones in my family’s life.
Not just the graduation, but that award ceremony.
I know Makenna didn’t really expect us to be there – most families only come to the graduation…and this was a full day before…
But being there was an absolute must-do for us. That would make Connection 10/10 for us.
So we made it happen.
What does a 10/10 in a particular relationship look like to you?
Next, you get to bring in outside help to turn it into your reality.
As in, work with your family, friends, or anyone else you want to connect more with… and put it on the calendar.
An easy way to start is to block out 5 times to hang out for the next 3 months.
I did this recently and found it so helpful – the combination of intention AND tactical, committed action.
So recently, Wes and I went on a relaxing trip to Scottsdale.
Well, other than the crazy intense hike we went on.
Have you seen my Story on that?
One of the few times I publicly drop F bombs. LOL
Anyway, we made it a priority to block out 1-on-1 time on our calendar to reconnect with each other—with no other obligations such as friends, work, etc.
We also do this at home.
- Walking our chocolate lab Xander together for 30 mins each week.
- Taking one non-work/friend/family trip per quarter.
- Booking a hotel in Boulder (or Denver) to just get away for the night.
The point I’m making here is upgrading your relationships doesn’t have to be anything fancy or expensive.
As long as it’s intentional and authentic—and you’re both aligned with getting to a 10/10—you CAN have a 10/10 in that area with that person.
Here’s where that comes in…
Sticking to the plan.
It’s amazing to decide you want a 10/10 relationship… create a plan… and bring them into the plan…
The hard part for many people is to stick to that plan!
Life gets busy… it’s easy to default to your old way of being.
But that old way of being didn’t deliver the 10/10 you want, right?
So you get to keep your word.
If you make a commitment with someone, honor it.
This is where time blocking your calendar for those next three months helps.
As my friend Marie Forleo says, “If it ain’t calendared, it ain’t happening.” LOL
The truth is, I’m able to create deeper connections with my family and those who are important because I have INTENTIONALLY designed my biz to align with that vision.
I chose a business model that aligned with my vision.
And it legit turned into a full-fledged biz!
